Southern Star, Inc. chooses Meraki MX70 cloud-managed routers to power WAN across 15 locations

SAN FRANCISCO — May 12, 2011 — Meraki, the cloud-based networking company, today announced that Southern Star, Inc. chose Meraki’s cloud-managed routers to power its wide area networking (WAN) including routing, DHCP, firewall service, and application traffic shaping.  Southern Star, Inc. is a regional service provider for Dish Network satellite systems, and its 500 employees receive and install Dish Network equipment for customers in Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Louisiana, and Arkansas.

“We chose the Meraki MX70 because of the ability to manage our 15 remote locations in a way we never have been able to before,” said Nathan Sterling, Southern Star’s Network Administrator.  He explained that in the past he had to travel to the remote offices whenever there was a problem with the internet, but Meraki’s cloud-managed architecture provides network-wide visibility from Southern Star’s headquarters.

“The thing we like most about the Meraki MX is the fact that we can manage all of our locations, including our corporate headquarters, from a web browser. A simple GUI allows us to easily implement a change across the board, and the change is instantly pushed to that location.”

The Meraki MX is the industry’s first cloud-managed router and provides functionality, such as layer-7 traffic shaping, that typically requires multiple devices. The MX Series’ cloud management system is built on Meraki’s proven cloud platform, which currently powers over 17,000 networks worldwide.

“The MX router provides all of the content filtering, site-to-site VPN, and firewall/routing functionality that we could possibly need for an extremely good value,” said Sterling. “We had looked at many different products, and when we found the Meraki product, we felt that it was made for us. What a phenomenal product.”
